Walter Augustus Huxman was born on February 16, 1887 near Pretty Prairie, in Reno County, Kansas. He was educated in local public schools, Emporia State College and the University of Kansas, earning a law degree from K.U. in 1914. He was assistant county attorney for Reno County for four years, then city attorney for Hutchinson for two years. Huxman's first experience with gubernatorial campaigns was in 1930 when he managed Harry H. Woodring's campaign for governor. This he did successfully. During the Woodring Administration, Huxman served on the Kansas Tax Commission. The Democratic Party nominated Huxman as its candidate during the 1936 campaign because of his distinguished presentation as the convention's keynote speaker. He won the election by over 20,000 votes. After his second unsuccessful bid for the governor's office in 1938, he established a private law practice. Before long President Roosevelt appointed him to a federal court judgeship, a position he held until his retirement in 1962. Huxman died of an apparent stroke in 1972 and is buried in Topeka.
