Williams, Samuel Porter, 1814-1897
Williams came to Lima (now Howe), LaGrange County, Ind. in 1836, and worked as a merchant, banker, and real estate agent. He helped to found the LaGrange Bank, served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives, was the director of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, and owned an iron foundry. Williams also founded a female seminary at Lima, and was a director of the LaGrange Collegiate Institute, a trustee of Wabash College, and a financial backer of Howe Military Academy.
