For 4 generations, the McMackin family operated a furniture store and funeral home in Salem, where 4 generations of McMackin men served as mayor. Warren E. McMackin (1817-1884), a Mexican War and Civil War veteran, founded the McMackin Furniture Store in 1855 and was Salem's first mayor. Charles L. McMackin (1860-1941) was mayor (1905-1907) and later a state representative (1907-1911, 1916-1924). Omar J. McMackin (1888-1963), a World War I veteran, was mayor 1935-1943 & 1955-1959. His sister, Helen M. McMackin (1895-1966), was state regent and national librarian of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Omar's son, Charles L. McMackin II, closed the McMackin furniture store in 1973. He was first elected mayor in 1971 and died in office in 1984. Omar's brother-in-law, Anker C. Jensen (1889-1974), was a prominent Kankakee attorney and Kankakee County state's attorney.
