Born in 1915, Batchelor studied piano and composition (with Fritz Hart) in Melbourne. She performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and as accompanist to local and visiting soloists. As a radio presenter on 3AR she aired many Australian compositions, including some of her own. In 1993 she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.
