The Institute of Musical Art (IMA) was founded in 1905 by Frank Damrosch and James Loeb.
It affiliated with the Juilliard Graduate School in 1926 to form the Juilliard School of Music (now The Juilliard School). The two schools maintained separate administrations, faculty and student bodies until their full merger in 1946.
