Sarah Ann McNelis was born in Butte on April 22, 1912, to William and Anna Marie (Kelly) McNelis. She attended St. Lawrence Grade School, Girls Central High School, received a bachelor's degree from St. Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas, and a master's degree from the University of Montana--Missoula in 1947. McNelis taught history in Turner, Montana, for six years, then at Butte High School until her retirement in the late 1970s. She belonged to Immaculate Conception Church, Butte Teachers Union, Butte Historical Society and was a longtime member and volunteer at the World Museum of Mining. McNelis died in Butte, Montana in July 2003.
