Jose R. Lucero was elected clerk of Doña Ana County in 1896, succeeding Pat Garrett as sheriff through election in 1900. He served five nonconsecutive terms as sheriff serving from 1901-1904, 1909-1912, 1917-1920, 1925-1928, and 1935-1936. Jose and his brother Felipe Lucero were County sheriffs for all but two terms until 1936. Lucero also served on several civic and educational boards, including the Las Cruces Board of Education, the Doña Ana Bend Colony Grant; Elephant Butte Irrigation Project, and on the Board of Regents of the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (NMCA&MA). Lake Lucero in the Tularosa Basin is named after the Lucero brothers and their father. All had ranches on what is now White Sands Missile Range.
