The Milwaukee Art Society was renamed the Milwaukee Art Institute June 21, 1916, to emphasize its growing importance in mounting exhibitions and providing art education through outreach programs for both school age children and adults. Community groups such as the McDowell Club, Men's Sketch Club, Milwaukee Photo Pictorialists, Civic Music Association, Wisconsin Players, Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors and Wisconsin Designer-Craftsmen (Society of Applied Arts), either rented or used the Institute as their permanent base. The Layton School of Art move into new facilities allowed the Institute to expand its galleries into the Layton Art Gallery. In 1953 both institutions were administered by Dr. LaVera Pohl, Director of the Institute. In 1957 both the Institute and the Layton Art Collection moved into the War Memorial center. January 1958 the Milwaukee Art Institute was renamed the Milaukee Art Center.
