Artemas Wheeler was born on November 11, 1829 in Weathersfield, Vermont and died on April 12, 1920. He was a farmer and carpenter in Weathersfield. His father, Artemas K. Wheeler (d. 1843), was born in Vermont and his mother, Sarah W. Wheeler (d. 1857), came from Massachusetts. Artemas Wheeler first married on December 3, 1857 and had three children by his first wife, Helen Kendall (1834-1866). After his first wife's death, he married again to Martha Boynton, and they had six children. Before the Civil War, he spent some time prospecting for gold in California. During the Civil War, he served three years in the 10th Vermont Regiment, 1862-1865, ending the war as a first lieutenant. After the war, he was elected to the Vermont legislature.
