Julia Floyd Smith was born on 30 January 1914 and resided in Savannah, Georgia with her husband, Albert F. Smith. Smith attended Florida State University where she received her B.S., M.S., and PhD in history. Smith taught history with an emphasis on the antebellum South for twenty five years at institutions of higher education including Armstrong Junior College (present day Armstrong Atlantic State University) from 1955 to 1961 and Georgia Southern College (present day Georgia State University) from 1965 to 1983.
