Hide Profile

The Institute of Inter-American Affairs, forerunner to the University of Florida's Center for Latin American Studies, was established in 1930. The first director of the Institute was Rollin Salisbury Atwood. The Institute's purpose was "to foster better cultural and economic relations between the United States and Latin America." The Institute's primary function was the organization of Latin American conferences and the exchange of scholars and students. In 1950, the Institute was dissolved and its functions assumed by the School of Inter-American Studies. The School co-ordinated degree programs and curriculum with Latin American content and sponsored an annual Caribbean Conference. In 1963, the Center for Latin American Studies superseded the School of Inter-American Studies to provide a broader organizational structure for an expanding range of activities.
