Geographer. First professor and founder of the Department of Geography at the University of Alberta. He was department chair from 1957-1967 and became University Professor in 1983. Co-founder and first chair of the Boreal Institute. His research, teaching, writing, and consulting work has centered strongly on Northern studies, native land claims, special atlases, and Scandinavia.
