He was a private, 1st lieutenant, and captain in the 4th Minnesota National Guard Infantry Regiment; 2nd lieutenant, 45th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment; 2nd lieutenant through colonel, Coast Artillery Corps; captain, Paymaster Department; and captain through colonel, Quartermaster Corps and a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) instructor at Howard University.
