The Glasgow University Company of Honourable Alchemists was formed in February 1907 by Dr T S Patterson. It was to be an informal society, with no president or subscriptions, and membership was restricted to those directly interested in chemical research, students or staff. Each meeting was to consist of a paper dealing either with research conducted in the university's laboratories or with important recently published research conducted elsewhere. Although in the beginning members were mainly staff, the society was open to all past and present senior students of chemistry. A secretary was appointed to keep a record of papers read. A treasurer was also appointed. Meetings were held between November and June with one business meeting a year. Since 1957 meetings were infrequent with the last recorded meeting held in 1983.
