Eithne Elizabeth MacFadyen was born in 1948 in Glasgow, Scotland. She matriculated to study dentistry at the University of Glasgow in 1965 . In her first year she studied Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry Lab. In her second year the subjects she studied were Biochemistry, Physiology, Experimental Physiology, Embryology, Practical Biochemistry, Dissection, and Neurology. In her third year she studied Pathology, Dental Histology, and Dental Mechanics and Materials. Her fourth year consisted of Clinical Dental Surgery, and Pharmacology and Radiology. In her final year she studied Conservative Dentistry, Dental Prosthetics and Orthodontics, Crowns and Anaesthetics, Periodentology, Preventative and Children's Dentistry, VD, and Dental Surgery and Pathology. She graduated BDS in 1970 . She then spent a sixth year studying for the Advanced Dental Basic Science course.
