William David "W.D." Markham (1848-1928) was the son of Henry Stovall Markham (1806-1893). He left North Carolina and traveled throughout the western United States, visiting many different locations in Missouri, the Indian Territory, Texas, and New Mexico, eventually settling in New Madrid, Missouri, and Comanche, Texas.
