Dietrich Borchardt was born in Hanover. From 1939 he worked as a university librarian in New Zealand; appointed Deputy Librarian at the University of Tasmania, 1953-1964; Librarian, University of Tasmania 1965-1981: Chief Librarian La Trobe University, Melbourne. Compiler of many bibliographic works and checklists and from 1970 editor of journal Australian Academic and Research Libraries. Editor of the volume Australians: a guide to sources, part of the series Australians: an historical library (1987).
