Born at Mecca, Ohio; graduate of the University of Michigan; served first with the 125th Ohio Infantry and later with the 2nd Division, 4th Army Corps; appointed sheriff of Noxubee County, Mississippi, in 1868; elected lieutenant governor of the state in 1869; became acting governor upon resignation of Governor James L. Alcorn; later practiced engineering in Arizona and retired to California.
