The Naval Arctic Research Laboratory (NARL) was established in 1947 by the Office of Naval Research. It was managed by several contractors, including the University of Alaska and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1954-1980). Its purpose was to provide facilities, logistical support, and services for scientists conducting basic and applied research in the Arctic in fields such as oceanography, underwater acoustics, atmospheric science, ice research, and aquatic and terrestrial biology.
