Friedrich Dürrenmatt wurde am 5.1.1921 in Konolfingen bei Bern als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren. Er starb am 14.12.1990 in Neuenburg. 1947 trat er als Dramatiker in Erscheinung mit dem Drama "Es steht geschrieben". Der internationale Durchbruch gelang ihm 1956 mit dem Stück "Der Besuch der alten Dame". Welterfolge wurden ebenfalls die Kriminalromane "Der Richter und sein Henker" und "Der Verdacht", sowie das Stück "Die Physiker". 1968/1969 war er Co-Direktor der Basler-Theater. 1969/1971 war Friedrich Dürrenmatt Mitherausgeber des "Sonntags-Journal". 1970/1972 war er künstlerischer Berater am Schauspielhaus Zürich. Ab Mitte der 70er Jahre entstand ein umfangreiches Prosa-Spätwerk.
