Colin M. Hawkins was born on 26 December 1847. He attended the University of North Carolina from 1864 to 1866, at which time he transferred to Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). A member of a prominent Warren County, N.C., family, he eventually settled in Raleigh, becoming president of a gas company there. He died on 1 June 1914.
