Tacoma Chemical Workers Union was organized in 1936 by employees of Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company; in 1937 they were joined by workers at Hooker Chemical Corporation and Wypen Oil Company; in 1944 161 affiliated locals formed the International Chemical Workers Union and the Tacoma local was designated 110. The union not only bargained for wages and benefits, it sought health protections in a group of industries that exposed workers to high levels of hazardous chemicals. In 1975-1976 the union undertook strikes against Hooker Chemical and Pennwalt (earlier known as Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company and Pennwalt Corporation).
