Smith, J.F., Rev., 1821-19 .
Smith was born 1821 Sept. 5 near Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., to Thomas and Mary (Scott) Smith, taught school for several years, and in 1845 was licensed as a Methodist Episcopal minister. He was ordained the next year. He married Martha L. Hightower in 1847, and they had several children. In 1859 he joined the Protestant Episcopal church and before 1863 became a minister of that denomination, with his first charge being that of Prattville, Autauga Co., Ala., and Lowndesboro, Lowndes Co., Ala. From 1869 forward he lived in Talladega, Talladega Co., Ala., except for the period 1882-1884, when he lived in Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., Ala. After 1891 he devoted himself exclusively to missionary work.
