O. G. Herning (1868-1947) came to the Cook Inlet area of Alaska in 1898 and established himself as a miner and merchant for nearly fifty years. As manager of Expedition No. 4 of the Klondike & Boston Gold Mining & Manufacturing Company, he oversaw the company's claims in Alaska for eight years. In 1905 he opened the Knik Cash Store (later the Knik Trading Company) and became an influential member of the community.
