The Davenport Hotel, designed by architect Kirtland K. Cutter, opened in downtown Spokane in 1914. The Davenport was a large, elegant hotel with a reputation around the West. The hotel boasted many ballrooms, banquet rooms, restaurants, and had a reputation for fine service, elegance and comfort. The Davenport became a business and social center for Spokane. In 1945, Louis Davenport sold the hotel and retired. The hotel declined through a series of owners in the 1950s and 1960s, and closed in 1985 with the threat of demolition. In 1986, the Friends of the Davenport was founded and eventually, it was bought by Walt and Karen Worthy, who spent thirty-six million dollars renovating it. The Davenport Hotel reopened in September 2002.
