The first member of the Williams family to come to Michigan was Oliver Williams (1774-1834). In 1808, Oliver, a native of Massachusetts, established a mercantile business at Detroit, trading supplies for furs. In 1815, he moved his family to Detroit and opened a hotel and boarding house called the Yankee. In 1819, Oliver moved to a site northwest of Pontiac, Michigan. It is said that the first school in the county was established in 1821 and operated out of his sheep shed.
In 1838, two of Oliver's sons, Alfred Leonzo and Benjamin Oliver, bought land and became the first settlers of what was to become Owosso, Michigan.
