Ogden family (Newark and Elizabeth, N. J.)

David Ogden (1707-1798) was a lawyer, head of the New Jersey Bar, an associate judge of the New Jersey Colonial Supreme Court, and a member of and counsel for the East Jersey Proprietors. He was also a loyalist during the Revolution. David Ogden married Gertrude Gouverneur with whom he had six surviving children. David B. Ogden (1775-1849), the grandson of David Ogden (1707-1798), was a lawyer in New York City. He married Margaretta Ogden with whom he had eight children.

Aaron Ogden (1756-1839) was a lawyer, the clerk of Essex County, a U.S. Senator, and the governor of New Jersey. In his later life, he was active in the steamboat business however legal monopolies on the New York and New Jersey waters bankrupted him. Uzal Ogden, Jr. (1744-1822) was a missionary and an ordained minister. He was the rector of the Trinity Church of Newark, and in 1798 was elected the first Biship of New Jersey, though never confirmed in that position. After troubles in his New Jersey position, he became a member of the New York Presbytery.
