Luke Lin was born in Shanghai, China, in 1923. He graduated from St. John's University in Shanghai in 1947, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. He fled China for Taiwan along with his wife and son in 1948. The eldest of five children, Lin's remaining three brothers and one sister remained in China after the Communist Revolution in 1949. In 1956, Lin left Taiwan to pursue a Master's Degree in Chemistry at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the degree program in 1958, Lin moved to Cleveland, Ohio and was employed by Waterlox Company.
Once he was established at Waterlox, Lin actively attempted to obtain a visa for his wife and son to enter the United States. Because of immigration restrictions, Lily and Daniel Lin were not permitted to join Luke until December of 1961. In 1965, the family moved to Rochester, New York, where Lin began a career in research and development with the Xerox Corporation, which lasted until his retirement in 1988. Lin has been involved with the Rochester Chinese Association since 2001 and is currently the Treasurer for the organization.
