Hess, Alyn W.

Alyn Hess was born in Freeport, Illinois in December 6, 1939. He earned degrees in the arts at Beloit College and landscape architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. As a landscape architect, he worked in Philadelphia; Rockford, Illinois; and Milwaukee. Hess was a tireless activist on behalf of gay rights in the 1970s and 1980s. He participated actively in the Gay Peoples Union (GPU), serving as president and chair of the board of directors, and helped to organize the Milwaukee AIDS Project in the early 1980s. He was a local founder of the Milwaukee chapter of Black and White Men Together and among the first men to join the Wisconsin chapter of the National Organization for Women. Hess was diagnosed as HIV+ in 1984. He died from AIDS-related complications in Glendale, Wisconsin on March 31, 1989.
