Clifford, Deborah Pickman
Variant namesMary Catherine Severance was born in Middlebury, Vt., the daughter of Ebenezer Severance and Corcina (Jones) Severance. As the eldest of nine children in a farm family, Mary struggled with endless home chores, but was eventually able to attend terms at Middlebury Female Seminary, Castleton Seminary, and the local district schools, where several scholarly young Middlebury College students encouraged her passion for learning. One of these was Warren W. Winchester who became her husband.
