Madeira was born Paul Madeira Mertz in 1904 but used Paul Madeira professionally. He was a pianist and arranger in the Jean Goldkette Band, the Fred Waring Band, and Bix Beiderbecke and His Rhythm Jugglers from 1925-1930. From 1936-1954 he was a composer and arranger for Columbia Pictures and later was a free-lance composer and arranger in the motion picture industry. Madeira also composed the 1942 hit song "I'm Glad There Is You."
