Opal Elsie Hepler was born in Streator, Illinois, on October 26, 1899. She obtained a B.S. (1921), M.S. (1929), Ph.D. (1934), and M.D. (1941), all from Northwestern University.

Dr. Hepler began her teaching career at Northwestern University in 1929 as an instructor in pathology. Promoted to assistant professor in 1941 she became associate professor in 1948 and served in that position until 1967. During her last year on the faculty, 1967-1968, she held the title of professor and in 1968 she was named emeritus. Dr. Hepler also served as director of clinical laboratories at both the Northwestern University Medical and Passavant Memorial Hospital.
