Sullivan, Francis J., 1852-1930.

Hide Profile

Frank J. Sullivan referred to himself, in this reminiscence, as "not old enough to be" one of the original pioneers, but was a director of The Society and a member of the Order of Native Sons and represented the Society of California Pioneers at the St. Louis Exposition. A Francis J. Sullivan was a member of the Society, and may be the same as the writer of this reminiscence. Born in 1852, he would not have been "old enough" to be one of the original pioneers. If he was one of the Directors of The Society, he must have been a member of the organization, and therefore a descendant of a pioneer. Francis J. Sullivan's father was John Sullivan, a suvivor of the Donner Party. Francis was elected State Senator of California in 1877, and in 1882 married Alice Phelan, sister of the then current Senator, James D. Phelan (who later became a mayor of San Francisco.) Francis originally studied law, and after his term of as Senator practiced law until his retirement in 1925.

From the description of Autobiography and Reminiscence of Frank J. Sullivan : "Address on the Pioneers of California, by Frank J. Sullivan.
