Jonathan Tenney (1817-1888) was born in Corinth, Vt. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1843 and received an M.A. and Ph.D. in 1846 and 1881, respectively. Tenney's long and prestigious career in education entailed numerous teaching and principal positions throughout northern New England and New York, as well as editing and writing for several educational journals.
Prior to and during his college education, Tenney taught in small country schools in his native state. Afterwards, he was principal of the academy in Hebron, N.H., master of the South Grammar School in Lawrence, Mass., and was principal of the Pittsfield, Mass., high school. For nine years, 1857 to 1866, he operated the Elmwood Literary Institute in Boscawen, N.H. He also held positions in Oswego and Albany, N.Y.
In addition, Tenney edited ad published, during the years 1854 to 1855, the _Stars and Stripes_, a New Hampshire newspaper, and edited the _Massachusetts Teacher_ and the _New Hampshire Journal of Education_. He wrote the "September History of the Dartmouth Class of 1843," a genealogy of the Tenney family, and numerous catalogs, reports, and articles. He lectured before educational associations throughout New England and organized many teachers' associations.
