Captain Ewart Johnston, son of General R.D. Johnston, was mustered in the military service as a private of Company I, 2nd Virginia Infantry on 30 June 1916 in Richmond, Virginia. He was promoted to second lieutenant on 16 October 1916 at the age of 27. He was then with the 2nd Virginia Infantry, Brownsville, Texas. On 28 September 1918, he became a captain. In World War II he served with Company L, 116th Infantry.
