Phi Eta Sigma is an honorary scholastic society for college freshmen. The society was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. E. L. Coyd, dean of students at North Carolina State College and advisor for its chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, worked to establish a University of North Carolina chapter in 1947. The first initiation ceremony was held 29 May 1947. There were 47 charter members. Eligibility for initiation requires freshman to achieve grades of A and B, with at least one half of the grades being A.
