Carruth, E. H. (Edwin H.)
In the summer of 1862, E.H. Carruth, Wichita Agency Indian agent, 1862-1864, and H.W. Martin, special Indian agent and later agent at the Sac and Fox Agency, 1862-1867, were appointed to accompany the U.S. Indian Expedition into Confederate-held Indian Territory.
One objective of this military mission was to test the union sympathies of Cherokee chief John Ross, who was believed to have allied his tribe with the Confederacy under duress.
