William Law (ca. 1750-ca. 1835), a grandson of early Connecticut Governor Jonathan Law (1674-1750), resided in Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut. He purchased several tracts of land from the Connecticut Land Company and made his first visit to the Western Reserve in the spring and summer of 1798. His son, William Law, Jr. (1779-1856) acted as his father's attorney and land agent in the Western Reserve, often traveling with Turhand Kirtland. In 1806, William Law, Sr., deeded property in Burton to the Erie Literary Society for the purpose of constructing a college. The college in Burton was not successful, perhaps because of its eventual competition with Western Reserve College in Hudson, and, in about 1840, the property reverted to the heirs of William Law, as had been stipulated in the original deed.
