The Arivaca Milling, Mining & Commercial Co. was incorporated on March 28, 1878 by John W. Dunn, George P. Reed, and William H.H. Witherell in Jefferson City (Mo.). In 1881 the name was shortened to Arivaca Mill Co. The company mined for silver, copper, and gold near Arivaca (Ariz.), 1878-1885. William H.H. Witherell was a New Orleans lawyer who was president of the company in 1881. From 1856-1860 he was in business with Robeson, Dennett, & Witherell in New Orleans. William F. (Frank) Witherell, probably William's cousin, was a N.Y. (State) native and West Point cadet. After the Civil War, he was associated with Witherell & Co., New Orleans Commission Merchants. The Clarke Historical Library has a book he wrote, Arizona as a silver country (1878). Letters of the Witherells are in the Louisiana State University Archives.
