Variant namesThe International League Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings played the longest game in professional baseball history. The game was started on April 18, 1981 at Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Pawtucket scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at one and send it into extra innings. Both teams scored in the 21st inning to keep the game going. After eight hours, seven minutes, and 32 innings, the game was suspended. It was completed on June 23, with Pawtucket winning on the bottom of the 33rd. Numerous Major League players took part in that game including Cal Ripen, Jr., Marty Barrett, Wade Boggs, Rich Gedman, and Bobby Ojeda. Bill George served as the official scorer for the game.
