Old Fort Western (Augusta, Me.)

Oldest surviving wooden fort in the U.S., Fort Western was built in 1754 by the Kennebec Proprietors, a Boston-based company seeking to settle lands on the Kennebec River which had been granted to the Pilgrims more than a century earlier; used during French and Indian War; restored by the Gannett family in the 1920s; name changed to Old Fort Western in late 20th century and in early 21st century to Old Fort Western Fund. Primarily known as Old Fort Western.
