George Peabody Wetmore, son of William Shepard and Anstiss Derby (Rogers) Wetmore, was born in London, England, on August 2, 1846. He graduated from Yale in 1867 and received his LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1869. That same year Wetmore was admitted to the bars of Rhode Island and New York. He was elected governor of Rhode Island in 1885 and served two terms. From 1894-1913 Wetmore was a member of the U.S. Senate. He died on September 11, 1921, in Boston, Massachusetts.
