Stan Kelly, O.A.M., lived in Ararat, Victoria, all his life. He worked as an engine-driver for the Victorian Railways for 41 years, retiring in the 1970s. His favourite pastimes include painting in water-colours, particularly Australian native plants, and prospecting for gold. In 1978 he was presented with the Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to conservation. In 1949 he published Forty Australian eucalypts, and in 1969 the first of his 2-part Eucalypts, complete with botanical descriptions and his water-colour plates.
