The White Alice Communications System (WACS) was developed in the early 1950s as part of a North American over-the-pole defense system. WACS linked the Aircraft Control and Warning System and Distant Early Warning System with Elmendorf and Eilson Air Force Bases, and also linked the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) site at Clear Air Force Base with the North American Defense Command. WACS construction was completed in 1959 and BMEWS was completed in 1962.
