Urquhart, R.E. (Robert Elliott), 1901-1988
Variant namesRobert “Roy” Elliott Urquhart (b. Nov. 28, 1901-d. Dec. 13, 1988), Major General in the British Army, attended the Royal Military Academy and was commissioned in 1920. He was serving in India when, in 1941, he was posted to North Africa, then appointed a staff officer in the 3rd Division in the UK. He also served with the 2nd Battalion Light Infantry, the 51st Infantry Division, and the 231st Infantry Brigade in Sicily. In 1944 he was given command of the 1st Airborne Division and participated in the Battle of Arnhem, Holland. He retired from the Army in 1955.
