Helfrecht (b.1925) served with the 8th Air Force during World War II.

Stationed in England, he flew missions into Germany and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After two years in the Reserve, he received a bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, moved to Wausau (Wisconsin) to pursue a career with GTE Corporation, and eventually settled in Madison (Wisconsin).
