Meinhard, Robert W.,
Gross enlisted on December 31, 1863. He served during the Vicksburg and Atlanta campaigns and General Sherman's "March to the Sea." The battery then proceeded to Richmond (Va.) and Washington, D.C. before being mustered out at St. Paul (Minn.) on July 1, 1865. Gross kept a journal and wrote to his wife Sarah, and children Nellie and Otis, who remained on their farm in Richmond Township, Winona County, Minnesota.
