What is now the Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science was established at Indiana University in 1960.
Originally named the Dept. of History and Logic of Science, the department began within the Graduate School with four faculty members and nine graduate students. Norwood Russell Hanson served as the first chair of the department. By 1963, the department changed its name to the Dept. of History and Philosophy of Science and in 1964 it awarded its first degrees.
