Ashmun Institute was founded in 1854 by John Miller Dickey, a Presbyterian minister, with the purpose of preparing freedmen to christianize Africa; named after Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, it was the first college established in the U.S. to have as its original purpose the higher education of youth of African descent; interracial and international; renamed Lincoln University in 1866, becoming the first educational institution named for the assassinated president; first recorded library collection was organized in 1866 with 1200 volumes and located on the second floor of Lincoln Hall; collection was moved to Cresson Hall in 1881; collection grew to 10,000 volumes by 1919, 15,000 by 1930, 30,000 by 1950 and 70,000 by 1970; Langston Hughes Memorial Library, which replaced the Vail Library, opened in 1972.
