The Cleveland Tuskegee Alumni Association was formed in 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio to provide a structured organization to raise money for the benefit of the Tuskegee Institute. The Tuskegee Institute opened on July 4, 1881 with a $2,000 appropriation from the Alabama Legislature. Booker T. Washington was the only teacher at the time of the school's founding. From its original student body of thirty and a single building, Tuskegee came to cover nearly 5,000 acres of land and grew to include 150 buildings. It became a world famous center for agricultural research and extension work. For a long period, beginning in 1896, George Washington Carver, who developed over 300 derivative products from peanuts and sweet potatoes, served as director of agricultural research.

Other schools at the Institute include those of nursing, teacher training, liberal arts, and veterinary medicine. Graduates of the Tuskegee Institute work in varied professions in cities throughout the United States and are affiliated with many of its alumni clubs. The Cleveland Tuskegee Alumni Association is one of the most active clubs in the United States.
